Google is making a push into energy efficiency, as its venture capital investment arm has just made a $20 million investment in a start-up company called Transphorm. With this investment, Google is betting that the future of technology is not s ilicon, as the current AC to DC power conversions waste a lot of energy in the form of heat.

Transphorm claims that it can cut 90% of that waste by using a material called gallium nitrate instead of silicon. The technology is exciting not only because it saves energy, but the efficiencies also mean that smaller products are possible, eventually eliminating the need for power cords, converters, and the like. The legendary VC firm Kleiner Perkins is also investing in Transphorm alongside Google, because they believe that that the public cares about energy security. Transphorm claims that its technology could one day save enough energy to power the whole West Coast.

Google Struggles in Chinese Market

Google Struggles in Chinese Market

A year ago a public feud with the Chinese government over censorship forced Google to move its search functions to Hong Kong, and the conflicts between the company and the government continue today. This has been highlighted by recent disruptions of Google's free Gmail service and threats to its online map business within the country.

However, the bigger problem facing the company in China may be that its share of China's search market has plunged. An opinion piece in China's People's Daily official newspaper expressed the government's view of the company as a modern British East India Company that once sold opium in the country. It declared that Google is not just a search engine tool, but a tool to extend American hegemony. Google vows to remain in China regardless, but its struggles underscore the obstacles that Silicon Valley internet companies face in a market where the free flow of information is still viewed as a political threat.

Google Is Planning Android Privacy Improvements

Former CEO Eric Schmidt has said that Google is will improve the security and privacy of Android devices by simplifying how its users define their sharing settings.
Google, along with Apple, has had its share of attention from lawmakers over the way that its mobile phone operating system reduces personal privacy, and has been questioned in the US Senate about location tracking.

According to the BBC, Schmidt, speaking at a UK conference on privacy, said that Google will simplify the app installation process and make it much clearer when and if users are expected to share their sensitive data. Schmidt added that that internally Google takes this sort of thing, "very seriously", and explained that Google is working on "a series of projects" designed to increase transparency.
One tool might be an addition to the Google Dashboard that will show users what data they are sharing and where, however, Schmidt added that this would only apply to one pool of data
